Clinical Decision Making in Family Therapy with Queer and Trans Youth

About this event

Clinical Decision Making in Family Therapy with Queer and Trans Youth

The talk will discuss 6 common clinical decision-making points in family therapy with queer and trans (QT) youth. These include: 1) How do I engage the whole family and not just mom? 2) Should there be a separate individual therapist for the parents and youth or can family therapist move between these modalities? 3) Are the caregivers "safe enough" to be in the therapy room with the QT youth? 4) I think this is about more than this kid coming out, should I continue with family therapy? 5) Dad is not engaging, now what? 6) When are the caregivers "accepting enough"? The talk will use real case examples, relational ethical decision making, and classic family therapy theories for walking through difficult clinical decisions while supporting a QT youth.

Learning Outcomes:
1. Participants will be able to describe the 6 common clinical decision-making points.
2. Participants will be able to explore family therapy theory concepts and modalities for making clinical decisions.
3. Participants will apply and practice relational ethical decision-making to queer and trans youth in family therapy.

Guest Speaker: Katie Heiden-Rootes, PhD (she/her/hers)
Dr. Katie Heiden-Rootes is a professor in the department of Family and Community Medicine in the School of Medicine and has a dual appointment as an Assistant Vice President in the Division of Diversity and Innovative Community Engagement at Saint Louis University. Her scholarship is funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Missouri Foundation for Health, and the National Science Foundation. Her scholarship focuses on two areas. First, the advancement of clinical training and research on the health of the LGBTQIA+ community and their families. And second, intersectional faculty equity and culture change within higher education. Dr. Heiden-Rootes co-founded the Queer & Trans Wellness Clinic @ SLU in the Center for Counseling and Family Therapy, a community-facing and accessible resource for mental health services. In her academic home, she teaches courses and lectures on human sexuality and gender, cultural humility, and qualitative research methods. Her work today is marked by the celebration of difference, engaging in difficult dialogue, and becoming comfortable in discomfort.
